Llevo más de 40 años trabajando como biólogo marino, tanto en la academia como en temas de consultoría. Hice mi pregrado en Zoología (1976 – Universidad de Glasgow, Escocia, Reino Unido) y mi doctorado en Biología Marina (1979 – Universidad de Liverpool, Inglaterra, Reino Unido). Desde 1979 he estado vinculado a la Universidad Heriot-Watt (Edimburgo, Reino Unido), primero como investigador/consultor de tiempo completo, luego como profesor y, finalmente, como profesor titular en biología marina. Recientemente obtuve mi título de Profesor Emérito en Biología Marina de la Universidad Heriot-Watt, luego de pensionarme.
Además de mi extensa experiencia en el Reino Unido, trabajando en temas de evaluación del impacto ambiental de las actividades de extracción de hidrocarburos en el Mar del Norte, el monitoreo del bentos marino, el trabajo de estudio para la designación de áreas marinas protegidas (AMP) y, más recientemente, la restauración de hábitats (arrecifes de ostras nativas del Reino Unido, lechos de mariscos y praderas de pastos marinos), he trabajado internacionalmente en Malasia, pero mi enfoque principal ha sido en América Latina. Mi interés en América Latina comenzó cuando pasé dos años de mi investigación doctoral de campo en México (estación marina en Mazatlán, Sinaloa, de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). Mi investigación estaba enfocada en la ecología y el reclutamiento de camarones peneidos post-larvales dentro de un equipo más grande de investigadores del Reino Unido/México que asesoraba sobre una pesquería comunitaria artesanal de camarones en lagunas costeras (complejo Caimanero-Huizache). Aquí fue donde aprendí a hablar español con fluidez. Mi primer trabajo en Colombia fue en 1985, cuando dirigí conjuntamente un taller sobre biología de post-larvas de camarón y aplicaciones acuícolas en INVEMAR, en Santa Marta. Después de esa experiencia, lideré varios proyectos de investigación de 3 a 5 años financiados por el Reino Unido en Ecuador (1997-2000), Colombia (1998-2001) y Panamá (2003-2008). En la última década estuve involucrado en Colombia (2009-2013) en la organización y participación de talleres de asesoramiento para el monitoreo ambiental costa-afuera para Ecopetrol, ANH y MADS. También dirigí un taller financiado por el Consejo Británico en Santa Marta para reunir a investigadores profesionales jóvenes, 15 investigadores colombianos y 15 del Reino Unido, para promover vínculos de investigación internacionales e interdisciplinarios en ciencias marinas e ingeniería. Igualmente fui co-investigador en el proyecto de 3 años ‘Pescandoparalavida’ en el Caribe colombiano, liderado por la Dra. Lina Barrios (2016-2019).
