I have been working as a marine ecologist, in academia and consultancy, for more than 20 years. I am a Marine Biologist, with MSc in Marine Ecology and Systematics, and PhD in Marine Ecology (2007-UK). Most of my work since 1997 has focussed on community ecology of tropical environments (coral reefs, seagrass meadows, rocky shores and interactions with mangroves and sandy beaches).

Before the noughties years (1995 to 2003) I was part of 5 research Projects in Colombia funded by COLCIENCIAS (Ecologia pesquera-1996, Areas Coralinas stage 1-1997, Areas Coralinas stage 2-1998 to 2000, coordinator macrofauna component for project Fanerogamas Caribe Colombiano-2001-2002, coordinator project Gorgona stage 3-2001-2002). During that period, I also worked collaboratively with other institutions in the Caribbean (INVEMAR Colombia-STRI Panama: use of corals as proxies of genetic connectivity in the wider Caribbean, coordinator in Colombia 2001-2002), and the Tropical Eastern Pacific-TEP (Heriot-Watt University-STRI-Darwin Initiative: Marine biodiversity assessment for Las Perlas Archipelago, Panama 2003-2007). Throughout that period, I also did some consultancy work for the Santa Marta Harbour (Colombia) and commercial diving. During my PhD, I worked on two basic topics: connectivity and proxy indictors of climate change in the TEP.

Since 2003, I have been learning about marine environments in other parts of the world (North Atlantic-UK, Mediterranean Sea, Indo-Pacific), either as a researcher/consultant (i.e. biotope mapping and monitoring project in Sullom Voe -Special marine Area of Conservation in Shetland UK-, base line study in Nha Trang-Vietnam, ecological genetic an ocean acidification studies in Vulcano-Italy) or lecturer (i.e. annual field work to Morecambe Bay and Knoydart-UK- as a lecturer at Lancaster University, courses as a lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University-UK and the University of Manchester-UK). My personal journey has opened my eyes about the community ecology studies, and comparisons between temperate and tropical environments. My personal research is taking me now into fascinating questions regarding conservation biology, MPAs, ecological genetics under climate change-ocean acidification scenarios.
